The physical and mental health of young people plays a key role in their ability to succeed in school, have rewarding relationships with family members and friends, and lead productive and happy lives. Cedar Hill Action Team (CHAT) is committed to working with you not only to educate your children, but also to ensure that they reach their full potential outside of the classroom.
To that end, we are offering parents the opportunity to have their teens participate in a peer advocacy program called Life Squad. The goal of Life Squad is to train students and staff members to identify suicide warning signs and how to act, support peers in the school to promote help-seeking behaviors and make an impact in the school culture regarding suicide and mental health to reduce stigmas. The participation in the program is free and completely voluntary. We hope you will take advantage of this tremendous opportunity for your teen to be able to help peers who may possibly be struggling.
Please read the information below and in the attached “Common Questions and Answers about Life Squad,” and then sign and return the Parent Consent Form on the next page to indicate whether you want your teen to participate.
How Does Life Squad Work? Life Squad is a program that trains students to be peer leaders for the school. The peer leaders will be considered the “eyes and ears” of the school and support fellow peers in the school to promote help-seeking behaviors. A peer leader will undergo a 9 week program focused on educating the leaders about warning signs of suicide, mental health, the art of listening and self care.
CHAT will be responsible for supervising the peer leaders of the Life Squad program. Your teen will not be able to be a peer leader without your permission.
